How to Avoid the Crowds in Grand Cayman (And Still See It All)

Spending the day on a boat sounds easy enough—bikini, towel, sunscreen, done. But when you’re headed out on the water in Grand Cayman, a little extra prep makes all the difference. Whether you’re joining a private charter for snorkeling, sandbar hopping, or a sunset cruise, here’s a practical guide on what to wear and what to pack to make the most of your time.

Keep It Light, But Functional

Start with breathable clothing you can move in. Lightweight swimsuits, quick-dry cover-ups, and linen shirts work well. If you’re not planning to swim right away, wear something you won’t mind getting splashed. Boat rides often involve sea spray.

Skip heavy cotton—it takes forever to dry. If you’re hopping in and out of the water throughout the day, pack an extra change of dry clothes for the ride back.

Footwear: Yes or No?

Most boats are barefoot zones. Flip-flops or sandals are fine for getting to the dock, but you’ll probably be asked to leave them at the boat’s edge. Bare feet are safest for grip and stability on deck.

If you’re planning to explore rocky beaches or shallow mangroves, bring a pair of water shoes or sturdy sandals with heel straps.

Don’t Forget Sun Protection

It’s no joke—sunlight reflects off the water and intensifies the burn. Locals know to bring:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (avoid sprays, they make the deck slippery)
  • Sunglasses with polarized lenses (for better water visibility)
  • A wide-brimmed hat or cap
  • Lip balm with SPF

A long-sleeve rash guard is also great for added sun protection if you’re snorkeling or paddleboarding for hours.

Essentials to Bring (And Why)

Even on short tours, these small items make a big difference:

  • Towel – Not just for drying off, but for sitting comfortably too.
  • Reusable water bottle – Hydrate often, especially under the sun.
  • Waterproof phone case or dry bag – For peace of mind and great photos.
  • Snacks – Especially if you’re traveling with kids.
  • Cash – Some tours may pass by local beach vendors or bars.
  • GoPro or waterproof camera – Cayman waters are too beautiful not to capture.

Leave These at the Hotel

  • Expensive jewelry (you won’t need it)
  • Large bags or heavy totes
  • Non-biodegradable plastics
  • Loud Bluetooth speakers (your captain probably has music onboard)

Dress for the Day You Want

Are you going all in with snorkeling and paddleboarding? Or planning a chill ride with drinks and sunset views? Your outfit and gear should match your plans.

If you’re unsure, just ask your captain what the day’s itinerary looks like. Local guides are happy to help you prep.
